Last time, it was the Jangmo-o.[break][break]

This time, it was another draconid, but… Alexei wasn’t sure if the Goomy was even a Dragon-type, the way it constantly melted into some kind of sentient puddle.[break][break]

Honestly, it reminded him of those weird things he’d read about in the books he used to study before he ran away from home.[break][break]

Cells, or some sort?[break][break]

Whatever it was, he told the person in charge of the Daycare that he would be back by the end of the day for the Goomy, and off he went.[break][break]

This therefore left a very slimy, sludgy, and extremely sticky Goomy glopping around the halls. It was in constant danger of drying out because of the weather, and had to make her way out to the pond to survive.[break][break]

i think this counts as november playdate for me

Orion's never left before.

Not once since obtaining the little ghostly candle had his trainer ever left him behind, and in spite of his words — "It's not safe where I'm going, I'll be back soon, okay?" — the Litwick felt lost and alone in his absence.

He hadn't even left one of the others to keep him safe! Katas and Delphi might as well have been parental figures for Phantom, and they had gone with their trainer. Did they even think about him before they left? All he was left with was — was a stranger, a Pokemon he'd never met before.

But they're his only company, and in favour of not being by himself, the Ghost-type reluctantly hovers over to where they're sliming toward the pond. He's never seen anything like it before, and his unlit wick quivers at the sight.

"Who — what are you?"

The Goomy wanted to be near a source of water, she could feel her body drying out too quickly.[break][break]

How did she survive on land, without constant moisture?![break][break]

Nobody knew how a Goomy’s physical structure held up in such circumstances, but for the region where they came from, they were almost always found near rainy areas. Very rainy areas, in fact.[break][break]

Due to the squelching noise, she almost missed the floating question that had been directed her way. Looking around, she wondered where the voice came from. But there was nobody else, not even another Pokémon, visible in front of her.[break][break]

Not until she decided to turn around did she see something—wait, a candle? Why was it unlit?[break][break]

“Uhh… I’m a Goomy. I have to get near water. I’m drying out. I feel like death,” she squelched out, trying so hard to keep her physical shape, lest she melted into a damned puddle before she could even reach the watery place she knew she spotted other Pokémon headed to.[break][break]

“My body keeps drying out under this hot sun. Why is it so evil?” she continued, squinting up at the orb in the sky. Oof.

The apparently-sentient almost-puddle tells him that she's drying out, and Phantom has to admit he doesn't know how to deal with that. He's a fire-type, the exact opposite you wanted to bump into in such a dire situation!

"Ohh," he says, soft and not at all helpful. On the subject of the sun, he glances up at the burning orb. "It doesn't feel hot to me..."

Of course, being a fire-type, his idea of hot was severely imbalanced. It makes his vision go funny if he stares at it for too long, so he looks back to the melting slime and follows its struggle toward the pond. There's a few other Pokemon already splashing around in there, completely oblivious.

"It's not too far," he encourages, though it's easy for him to say when he can float along unimpeded by the heat. "You can make it!"

The sun seemed to get even hotter. Or was it because of the Litwick?[break][break]

She wasn’t sure, really.[break][break]

She tried her best and hardest to trudge through the grass, attempting to squish her way along and hold her shape together. Back in the region where her kind are native to, Goomy are frequently found near puddles or in extremely rainy weather, which was why to have one out here in the tropical heat of Hoenn was nothing close to suicide.[break][break]

Hearing the cheering of the floating candle, she continued to squelch her way forward, inching as slowly as she could manage. It was slow, it was painful, but the moment she’d hit a patch of dirt that was effectively mud, she managed to go much quicker.[break][break]

Eventually, a splashing noise signaled her arrival into the cold, refreshing water—and she finally managed to reconstitute herself into the form that she was meant to look like.[break][break]

A cute little lump then stuck its head out of the shallow water, freshly-hydrated and feeling very much alive.[break][break]

“Hey, what’s your name?” she asked the Litwick, hoping the other was still nearby.

'Goomy' disappears into the water at last, and emerges looking more like a Pokemon than the half-puddle that he'd first greeted.

"Oh, that's what you look like..." Phantom sounds oddly fascinated as he hovers next to the water and examines the purple-slug-thing. It's got little antennae-horns and everything.

It asks for his name, and he thinks about it.

"Orion calls me Phan - tom," he says, carefully sounding out the name. "Which sounds scary, but he says it like it's a good thing."

If a candle could shrug, this one would have, but instead he just sways on the spot.

"Do you have a name?"

“Well…”[break][break]

If there was one thing she hadn’t asked her human companion yet, it was that. Why didn’t she have a name yet? She had no idea. But the concept itself, not having a name—it frightened her so much.[break][break]

“How… how long did it take for your human to pick out your name?” she inquired. Not that she was jealous or anything, no. She just hoped that she had a very indecisive human for a companion, otherwise she would be stuck without a nickname, or at least something to call herself by. And that was a scary thought, to say the least.[break][break]

To be fair, it terrified her.[break][break]

“Because… uhm… my human hasn’t given me one yet. And it’s scary, not having a name to call myself by. I can’t just… call myself a ‘Goomy’ forever, can I?” she admitted a few moments later, and it was clear that she was scared to bits.[break][break]

Thankfully, the water was cold and sweet, and it helped her stay in the same squidgy shape that she always knew her permanent body to be like. Purple, down to the random spots of green here and there.[break][break]

“If I get called a ridiculous name, I would never live it down… it’s embarrassing,” she added a few moments later after temporarily sinking her head under the water to collect her thoughts.

Apparently, he'd hit a nerve.

Phantom hovers uncertainly as his new friend has a bit of an identity crisis. He listens carefully, sympathizing, and lets out a soft puff of warm air when she's done. It was definitely a complicated situation, wasn't it?

"It didn't take very long," he says, hesitating like he's worried this might upset her more. "But he nicknames all of us really quick! He says I like to hover real close — like a Phantom — so I guess it was an in-the-moment thing."

He's OK with the name. He does like to get close to people, after all. He's just so lonely otherwise. And so many people are scared of him because of other Litwick that drain the energy of those they get close to, but he keeps his flame unlit!

"Not all trainers nickname their Pokemon," he tells her, as gently as he can. "Does yours nickname everyone else?"

“I hope mine names me soon,” the now-solid Goomy remarked from the safety of the water. Ahh, it felt so good to be here. So squishy, and alive. Rather than dying out on dry land, which was a mistake—maybe the human who had handled her wasn’t aware that Goomy had to be in a constantly damp place.[break][break]

Oops?[break][break]

“I know some of the others that don’t fly have nicknames,” she began, musing as she sunk back into the water to get herself properly damp before reappearing a few moments later.[break][break]

“All of the ones that fly—the Flying-types, they have names. Even the other winged ones who aren’t Flying-type have nicknames,” she added a few moments later.[break][break]

“You think, some humans take forever to name us because they want our nicknames to be just right? I mean—you did share how your human named you Phantom, because… you’re there. You can scare people. Also, why is your wick thing not lit?” she continued, staring up at the floating candle.[break][break]

“Isn’t that supposed to be lit up, or something?”[break][break]

Ahh, the innocent words of a child. Of course, she didn’t know what a Litwick was, can you blame her? Forgive her naivety!

Phantom thinks that doesn't sound fair. He can understand that some trainers don't nickname their Pokemon at all, but why would you nickname some of them and not others? Pokemon had feelings, too! The Litwick can't imagine how he might feel if he were one of the few Pokemon Orion owned that didn't have a nickname. Probably like he wasn't good enough, that he'd done something wrong...

He doesn't share these thoughts aloud, not wanting to alarm his new friend.

"I think so," he says instead, aiming for reassurance. "Maybe he's just waiting to match your nickname to your personality!"

She mentions his wick, then, and he goes cross-eyed for a moment in a vain attempt to look up at the top of his own head.

"Oh, um..." I mean, he is called a Litwick, he can see where that idea might have come from. "Orion says that it's, um, dangerous? Not for me, but for other people if I... keep it lit. B-But it can light up."

It flares briefly to life as if in demonstration, casting its orange reflection across the pond before it dies down once more.

The heavy thud of human footsteps and the low hum of voices draws the attention of the dual-type, and he brightens in relief.

"I think that might be our trainers!" He turns to the Goomy, swaying happily in the air. "I-It was really nice meeting you. I hope you get a name soon!"
